My name is Amy Gorton and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) with over 17 years of clinical experience. My specialty area is primarily focused around women's issues and women's health but I also work with clients with a wide range of concerns including: anxiety, depression, stress, relationship issues, family issues, school/career challenges, life changes as well as grief and loss, OCD and ADD/ADHD. My treatment style is warm, interactive and compassionate. I believe in earning respect through giving respect. My treatment approach combines Client-Centered, Cognitive Behavioral, Humanistic and Family Systems Theories. I will tailor the therapeutic sessions to meet your unique and specific needs and goals. I am delighted to be in a place in my life where the mental health of others is primary. I am an LMHC and have been so since 1998. I believe that counselors that can help others are born with the counseling gift; and the educational curriculum and specialties are supports in accomplishing their academic needs. I say this because even as a young woman riding the city bus, strangers would sit next to me and tell me their most horrible life experiences. In other words, I was born to do what I do. For the past several years I felt that my professional counseling days were over and in that time I completed several workshops, wrote a devotional, and looked forward to a time when I could relax and bask in a life well completed. That dream has changed as I have witnessed the world as a whole in the last several years. We are facing new and even greater challenges in our lives! (e.g., Covid-19, Mass Unemployment, Families on the brink of disaster, Mass Shootings, etc.) I am returning to the counseling world to do my part. I see there is so much that needs to be done. I cannot rest in my gifts anymore. I am here to listen and support your emotional health. We all need that kind of support, now more than at any time I have witnessed in my years of counseling interactions. I look forward to being of service in anyway I can. I am a licensed professional counselor (LPC) since 2018. I counseled the previous 2 years at a Limited License Professional Counselor (LLPC) at Par Rehabilitation. I worked and learned under Todd Westfall as an LLPC. I stayed on at Par for nearly 2 years after earning my LPC . I have since moved on to Fountain of Wisdom and Hope and A New Day Counseling. Since starting to counsel, I have worked with individuals with employment cases, depression, anxiety, autism, visually impaired, bi-polar and schizophrenia. I have worked in the disability environment my entire life. I have worked in direct care group homes, Hope Network, Community Mental Health and Harris Development Center. I have experience in case management of disability claims, Michigan Rehabilitation Services, SSI/SSDI claims with the Social Security Administration, short-term disability claims with Sedgwick CMS. Another area that I have experience in is with the Lansing Public School system. I worked as a special education assistant working with special education students and at-risk students. At age 18 I suffered a traumatic brain injury and had to overcome nearly all of life's obstacles to not only to become independent but to educate myself in the midst of living with the effects of a traumatic brain injury . So that experience gives me a unique perspective of how a client feels living with a disability and having the knowledge and information learned and used as a professional counselor. My name is Risa Mendelson. I have an MA in Rehabilitation Counseling and Community Inclusion. This degree enabled me to be able to serve diverse populations of clients to evaluate individual needs and plan and implement interventions. I have a BS in psychology (Human Development) and I am a licensed Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant.
